Dr. Ciaran Bent has provided comprehensive, caring, personal medical care as a GP in Dundrum for many years. With his associate Dr Michelle de Brun they are dedicated to providing a modern complete medical service to their patients and families, dealing with their medical needs.

They can draw on vast knowledge and medical experience in providing a caring and professional medical service. Where it applies they can refer their patients on to one of the many consultants and specialist they liaise with on a daily basis.

Even if you have no symptoms it is very “responsible” to have an up to date screen,  at any age, as a lot of STIs are carried without symptoms. These are very routine tests that we carry out daily. For example we always try to encourage patients in this regard when they are having a smear test. Any unprotected sexual contact should be followed up with an STI screen.

Alternatively urine tests can also be carried out but patients must not pass urine for 2 hours before visit.

Please phone for an appointment. If you wish, you do not have to tell the secretary you want a STI check up (however it would be helpful to allow for extra time) Tests can be carried out at any time of the day or Saturday morning.

Chlamydia is a very common sexually transmitted infection. Up to 70% of infected women may carry it and have no symptoms. It is very simply treated with a special short course of antibiotics. The most important thing is to have the test to diagnose it.

Gonorrhea is less common but may be symptom free in women.

HIV- this is now very manageable and with modern medication patients do very well.

• Cervical Check available – free under the Government Screening Programme for 25 year olds to 60 year olds.
• For patients younger than 25, or if a patient requests  a smear sooner than the recall time, we can arrange a private smear test.
• The aim of the smear is to pick up early pre cancer of the cervix for early treatment.
• A gynae check up is also carried out to pick up disease of the ovaries and uterus.
• Mid cycle is a good time for the test.
• A smear is not a STI test. It is very “responsible” to ask for swabs for Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea to be taken at the time of the smear ( there is a small charge for this).
